Professional ProfilesSound technician

The profession of a sound technician or audio engineer is very creative and versatile. They are both an engineer and an artist and could be working in theatre or in the music, radio, television, or film industry. Sound technicians are tasked with ensuring that images and sound are well synchronised, choosing the right equipment (e.g. microphone or speaker) for the respective occasion, and creating sound effects using a mixer, e.g. for movies or during performances.

For you to be successful in this profession, you must have a musical ear, extensive knowledge on music, and be creative. Previous knowledge in acoustics and sound is also advantageous.

Whereas this profession was still being taught at the workplace a few years ago and the master’s skills and competencies passed on to the apprentice directly, there are now sophisticated training courses for sound technicians since the complexity of the equipment demands a high level of technical knowledge. Higher education training for two to five years is usually required for this profession. However, the profession is not regulated. Training in Luxembourg is currently not possible. Those interested can however attend universities in our neighbouring countries.

A sound technician is mostly a casual worker with limited contracts.
