The barman or the bar lady plays an essential role in their respective business and carry responsibility far beyond the simple serving of beverages. Before the opening of the bar, they prepare the premises, carry out cleaning tasks, maintain the equipment, place the tables properly, make sure that the dishes and glasses are clean, fill refrigerators and coffee machines etc.
The barman or the bar lady looks after and replenishes the daily stock of products and accepts orders. When the bar opens, s/he receives the guests, prepares the drinks, and serves them. S/he must be able to use equipment, including shakers, skilfully. When serving, s/he is in contact with the guests, advises them on their selection, and informs them of new products. The job description often includes running the bar and providing a suitable atmosphere. Sometimes s/he is also required to participate in the design of the premises and to help with the musical selection.

The staff at the bar is very much in contact with people. They must be friendly and hospitable and diplomatic. Firm action may also be required in the area of interpersonal problems, however. Since the bartender may hear confidential conversations, confidentiality must be ensured. Bartenders are in demand for hotels, restaurants, coffee houses, clubs etc.
